Zeolites, particularly the mineral clinoptilolite, played a significant role in mitigating radiation contamination following the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Approximately 500,000 tons of clinoptilolite-rich zeolite were utilized for various decontamination efforts:

Water Decontamination: Zeolite was employed to filter water from the Chernobyl power plant, achieving a 95% reduction in cesium-137 and a 50-60% reduction in strontium-90 levels. 

Soil Treatment: The addition of zeolite to contaminated soils decreased the uptake of radionuclides by plants, reducing cesium absorption by a factor of 2-3 and strontium by 50-70%.
